The return of Barnsley Folk Festival 2027

This spring saw the return of Barnsley Folk Festival, a traditional song and dance festival that first took place in 1986. Hosted and managed by Barnsley Civic, the festival saw nearly 2,000 people attend a range of concerts, dances and workshops over a weekend in May. The weekend also included a sell-out concert from headliner Kate Rusby. Barnsley Folk Festival will take place over Wednesday 19 – Sunday 23 May 2027. Friday night will see the exclusive An Evening with The Roberts; an intimate concert with Barnsley’s foremost musical family; featuring both award-winning duos Kathryn Roberts & Sean Lakeman and Gilmore & Roberts sharing the stage together for the first time. Kathryn and Sean have forged a creative bond that is as enduring as it is inspiring. Their 30 year journey together stands as a testament to their artistry, authenticity, and masterful musicianship. From young trailblazers in the 1990s folk supergroup Equation, they have become one of Britain’s most admired and decorated folk duos. Their contribution to the British folk landscape has not gone unnoticed. Kathryn and Sean have twice been named ‘Best Duo’ at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. Their live shows have earned them a devoted following and a reputation in the British folk and acoustic scene. Gilmore & Roberts celebrate 20 years Performing alongside Kathryn and Sean is Kathryn’s brother Jamie Roberts and Katriona Gilmore. The performance will combine award-winning songwriting with astounding musicianship and their trademark harmonies to create a powerful wall of sound. Nominated three times at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, Katriona Gilmore and Jamie Roberts have toured Canada and mainland Europe. They have played some of the UK’s biggest acoustic festivals and toured with folk rock legends Fairport Convention. 2026 sees Gilmore & Roberts celebrate two decades of music with an album of newly recorded career highlights. Having both grown up in the Barnsley village of Dodworth, siblings Kathryn and Jamie have taken the UK folk scene by storm over the last few decades. Support for the evening comes from singer-songwriter Jasmine Fearn. On the festival’s Saturday night, Barnsley’s very own purveyors of comedy folk music, The Bar-Steward Sons of Val Doonican and their army of knit-wear clad fans will take over Barnsley Civic’s theatre. Now entering their twentieth year, The Doonicans are far from being your typical folk ensemble. Outspoken and energetic ringleader Scott Doonican, and his brothers-from-other-mothers, Alan Doonican, Mo-Jo Doonican, Dave Doonican and the Rt. Rev. Jeremiah Rickenbacker Doonican III, have made their name with their anarchic live shows and no-holds barred parodies of famous songs. Over the last two decades, the group have played over 1400 shows, played to 20,000 people at Fairport’s Cropredy Convention, the Avalon Stage at Glastonbury Festival, recorded collaborations with the likes of Frank Turner, Eliza Carthy and members of the Levellers. They have also scaled the  heights of a #1 and a #2 single as well as a #2 album on the iTunes Comedy Charts. A packed programme across the festival Alongside Barnsley Folk Festival’s headline concerts, there will be performances by Serious Sam Barrett, The Rhythm Chaps, The Hooliemen, Shoon, Parson’s Lot and Glass Ships. Also expect folk sessions, storytelling, theatre, traditional dance performances, craft activities and plenty of food and drink.

Dust and Grace release remix and video for “Love Doesn’t Live Here”

Pittsburgh-based country music project Dust and Grace has released the radio remix of its heartfelt ballad “Love Doesn’t Live Here”, alongside an official music video. The remix is available on all major streaming platforms, with the accompanying video premiering on YouTube and social media. “Love Doesn’t Live Here” explores heartbreak and healing Written by Michael Stover, “Love Doesn’t Live Here” is an emotional country ballad that reflects on the quiet aftermath of a relationship coming to an end. Rather than focusing on conflict, the song explores acceptance, healing and the realisation that sometimes love simply fades, leaving memories behind. New radio remix adds contemporary country sound The newly released radio remix builds on the original recording with richer keyboard arrangements, fuller contemporary country production and a soaring harmony guitar solo. While introducing a more polished sound aimed at country radio audiences, the remix retains the intimate storytelling that sits at the heart of the song. Official music video brings the story to life The accompanying music video uses cinematic imagery to reinforce the song’s emotional message. Centred around an empty family home, the video portrays a place that once witnessed love and happiness before becoming a symbol of loss, remembrance and moving forward. The visual storytelling mirrors the themes explored throughout the song, adding another layer of emotional depth. Dust and Grace continues to build momentum The release follows a series of achievements for Dust and Grace within the independent country music scene. The project has previously earned a No. 1 Independent Music Network Country single, two Top 10 Amazon Music Country Gospel hits, two Top 15 CDX Nashville chart singles and two UK iTunes Country Chart hits. Dust and Grace also received the Independent Music Network Award for Best Inspirational Song for its uplifting single “Hallelujah”.

Blast from the past: Robert Plant

The Americana Music Association has announced that Robert Plant will receive its prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the 25th Annual Americana Honors & Awards. The ceremony will take place on Wednesday, 16 September, at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium, recognising Plant’s enduring contribution to Americana and American roots music. Robert Plant’s passion for Americana Although best known as the iconic lead singer of Led Zeppelin, Plant has spent decades championing roots music, embracing influences that span blues, folk, gospel, country and Americana. His musical curiosity has seen him continually explore American roots traditions, earning widespread respect as both an interpreter and advocate of the genre. Raising Sand helped bring Americana to a wider audience One of the defining moments in Plant’s Americana journey came with the release of Raising Sand, his Grammy Award-winning collaboration with Alison Krauss and producer T Bone Burnett. The critically acclaimed album introduced millions of listeners to the richness of Americana music and played a significant role in raising the genre’s profile. Its success also helped pave the way for the Recording Academy to establish the Best Americana Album category at the Grammy Awards. Plant later reunited with Krauss for Raise the Roof, while continuing to collaborate with leading Americana artists including Patty Griffin and Buddy Miller on “Band of Joy”. Continuing to champion roots music More recently, Plant has continued his exploration of Americana with “Saving Grace” and the follow-up EP “Saving Grace: All That Glitters…”, recorded alongside singer Suzi Dian and a group of musicians from near his home on the Welsh borders. The projects feature interpretations of songs by acclaimed Americana and folk artists including Gillian Welch, Memphis Minnie, Blind Willie Johnson, Martha Scanlan and Sarah Siskind among others. Americana Music Association celebrates Robert Plant The Lifetime Achievement Award recognises Plant’s decades-long commitment to preserving and promoting American roots music alongside his remarkable career as one of rock music’s most influential vocalists. Jed Hilly, Executive Director of the Americana Music Association, said: “Robert Plant’s relationship with Americana music extends far beyond influence—it is one of genuine passion, stewardship and artistic curiosity. “His willingness to immerse himself in the traditions of blues, folk, country and gospel, while continuing to push their boundaries, has expanded the audience for Americana around the world. “Few artists have done more to honor the music’s past while helping shape its future. We are thrilled to recognize his extraordinary contributions with the Americana Music Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award.” As Robert Plant prepares to recieve this recognition, Maverick Country takes a look back at his career so far: Few artists have enjoyed a career as diverse, influential and enduring as Robert Plant. Best known as the unmistakable voice of Led Zeppelin, Plant has spent more than five decades pushing musical boundaries, evolving from one of rock’s greatest frontmen into one of the most respected champions of blues, folk, country and Americana. Born in West Bromwich, England, in 1948, Plant developed an early fascination with American blues, inspired by artists including Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf and Skip James. Those influences would shape his musical identity long before he found worldwide fame alongside Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and John Bonham in Led Zeppelin. During the 1970s, Led Zeppelin became one of the biggest rock bands in history, selling hundreds of millions of records worldwide. Albums such as Led Zeppelin IV, Physical Graffiti and Houses of the Holy helped redefine rock music, while songs including Stairway to Heaven, Kashmir and Whole Lotta Love cemented Plant’s reputation as one of the greatest vocalists of all time. Following the death of drummer John Bonham in 1980, Plant resisted attempts to recreate Led Zeppelin’s success, instead embarking on a solo career built around artistic exploration rather than commercial expectation. Over the following decades, he embraced influences from world music, African rhythms, Celtic folk and traditional American roots music, continually reinventing himself while earning widespread critical acclaim. That spirit of musical curiosity ultimately led Plant towards Americana, where he found another creative home. His landmark collaboration with Alison Krauss on the 2007 album “Raising Sand”, produced by T Bone Burnett, proved to be one of the defining releases of the modern Americana movement. The Grammy Award-winning album blended country, folk, blues and bluegrass into a timeless collection that introduced millions of listeners to the genre and remains one of the most influential Americana releases of the 21st century.

Gareth Dunlop new single "Freewheeling" maverick-country.com

Gareth Dunlop returns with “Freewheeling”

Belfast-born singer, songwriter, and producer Gareth Dunlop returns on July 31st with his tender and deeply personal new single, “Freewheeling”. The song is about memory, growing older, and the parts of ourselves we never quite leave behind. “Freewheeling” finds Dunlop at his most reflective, reaching back into childhood to make sense of who he’s become. The single was born from an ordinary afternoon that turned into something much bigger. What started as nostalgia became a meditation on identity, how the distance between who we were and who we are now can feel enormous, even as something essential stays exactly the same underneath. Reflecting on childhood memories Speaking on the track, Gareth said, “I wrote Freewheeling after spending a day driving around my old neighbourhood. I had all these memories of my childhood come racing back. The differences between my life then and now felt massive. Looking back, I probably thought I’d have it all worked out by now. In a lot of ways, I’m still making it up as I go. “I wanted to write about that feeling. How so much around me has changed, but there are parts of me that are still on those streets without a care in the world. The kid recording the top 40 on his Hi-Fi, cycling around the streets on his BMX and watching action movies with his dad is still in there. I think that’s true for a lot of us. We grow older, take on more responsibility, and the world keeps changing. Deep down, we never really stop carrying the people we used to be” It’s a song about permanence hiding inside change. It’s about the idea that growing older doesn’t mean growing into someone new, but learning to carry every version of yourself at once. That sense of double vision, the adult and the child occupying the same body, runs through every corner of the song. Dunlop paints his younger self in vivid, specific detail: a boy shaped by ’80s action heroes and taping the charts off the radio, blissfully unaware of the responsibilities waiting for him down the road. Against that innocence, he sets the disorientation of adulthood, the strange, almost dizzying realisation that the kid who once had the whole world figured out is now the one trying to keep the lights on. And yet, as the song’s soaring, repeated refrain insists, nothing essential has really changed at all. Underneath it all, he’s still that same boy, still freewheeling. One heartfelt song at a time “Freewheeling” arrives as the latest chapter in what has become one of the most creative periods of Dunlop’s career. Since the release of his acclaimed third album, “Welcome To The House Of I Don’t Know”, Dunlop hasn’t slowed down for a moment. He has delivered a steady stream of music that has deepened and expanded his emotional palette. He followed the album with standalone singles “Goodbye All Over Again” and “Worlds”. This year alone has already brought two further releases: “Find Myself” and the raw, aching “Wish I Couldn’t Feel A Thing”. The latter marked a striking creative turn for Dunlop, pulling him into alt-R&B territory. The song’s unflinching honesty about grief and the strange comfort of numbness and its willingness to sit inside heartbreak rather than resolve it. “Freewheeling” feels like a natural evolution from that moment. It trades the aching grief of “Wish I Couldn’t Feel A Thing” for something gentler and more affectionate. Together, the recent run of singles paints a portrait of an artist unafraid to sit inside difficult, tender emotions and translate them into songs that feel universal. Dunlop will bring “Freewheeling” and the rest of his catalogue to audiences across the UK and Ireland this year. It begins with an intimate single-promotion show in his hometown before joining Canadian favourites Crash Test Dummies for an extensive co-headline run. With “Freewheeling”, Dunlop adds another chapter to a body of work that keeps returning to the same central question: how do we hold onto who we were, while becoming who we’re meant to be? It’s a question he seems determined to keep asking, one heartfelt song at a time. Upcoming Live Shows 1st August — Around The Tabletop, EastSide Arts, Belfast, UK (single promotion) 1st October — Wylam Brewery Tap, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK 2nd October — Glasgow, UK (with Crash Test Dummies) 3rd October — Edinburgh, UK (with Crash Test Dummies) 4th October — Morecambe, UK (with Crash Test Dummies) 7th October — Belfast, UK (with Crash Test Dummies) 8th October — Vicar Street, Dublin, Ireland 9th October — Liverpool, UK (with Crash Test Dummies) 10th October — Manchester, UK (with Crash Test Dummies) 11th October — Leeds, UK (with Crash Test Dummies) 12th October — Norwich, UK (with Crash Test Dummies) 14th October — Islington Assembly Hall, London, UK 15th October — Trinity Centre, Bristol, UK 16th October — O2 Academy Oxford, Oxford, UK 18th October — The Brook, Southampton, UK

Megan Moroney has unveiled her debut fragrance, Calliope. maverick-country.com

Megan Moroney launches debut fragrance

Megan Moroney has unveiled her debut fragrance, Calliope, marking her first venture into the beauty industry. Created in partnership with Scent Beauty, Inc., the perfume was announced as Moroney’s highly anticipated Cloud 9 Tour arrived in New York City, giving fans an early look at the singer’s latest creative project. Calliope draws inspiration from Greek mythology and Japanese art Named after Calliope, the Greek muse of epic poetry whose name means “beautiful-voiced”, the fragrance reflects Moroney’s reputation for heartfelt songwriting and emotional honesty. The perfume is presented in a heart-shaped bottle, while its design is also inspired by the Japanese art of kintsugi, the centuries-old practice of repairing broken pottery with gold or silver to celebrate, rather than conceal, its imperfections. Moroney said: “I’ve spent the last year and a half hand crafting Calliope, my debut fragrance. The heart-shaped bottle felt very me, of course. But beyond the heart, it’s inspired by the Japanese art of kintsugi—the centuries-old practice of repairing broken pottery with gold or silver, embracing its’ cracks rather than hiding them. “It’s a reminder that our imperfections and experiences become part of what makes us unique. For me, my songs are sometimes the most broken pieces reshaped into something that I’ve seen heal me and so many of you. “The fragrance itself is fresh, effortless, and meant to be an everyday signature. On the back of the bottle, I added the handwritten lyrics ‘You Shine’ because I truly believe the world can be hard on beautiful things. “The most beautiful things come from broken pieces, and I hope this fragrance serves as a reminder that your light shines even brighter because of everything you’ve been through.” Scent Beauty celebrates partnership with Megan Moroney Steve Mormoris, Chief Executive Officer of Scent Beauty, Inc., said: “With Calliope, we sought to capture a fragrance that feels personal, aspirational and unmistakably Megan. “As an influential break-out artist and influencer of her generation, Scent Beauty was thrilled to partner with Moroney to develop her signature fragrance.” Calliope is available in four formats, including a 100ml bottle, a 30ml bottle, a 10ml travel size and a body mist. The fragrance is available now through FragrancebyMeganMoroney.com and ScentBeauty.com before arriving in selected US retailers, including Walmart, JCPenney, CVS and Urban Outfitters, on 15 August. Fans in the UK will be able to purchase Calliope exclusively through Superdrug from 1 September.
