Brothers Osborne – “R.I.P”

CMA award-winning country duo Brothers Osborne launch a new chapter of music today with “R.I.P.” Written by TJ Osborne, Hunter Phelps, and Alysa Vanderheym, and produced by longtime collaborator Jay Joyce, “R.I.P.” finds John and TJ at their finest. Delivering what feels like a long-existent catalog staple, “R.I.P.” is rich with Brothers’ guitar-heavy instrumentation, a stomping backbeat, and reinforced by TJ’s singular baritone. “R.I.P. is us getting back to our musical roots,” John says. “This new music is a rearview glimpse into where we came from while still driving forward into the new and unknown.” “We’re not just getting back to where we were born and raised, but to the roots of where we started musically. A time when music wasn’t dictated by anything other than what our hearts and souls wanted to say,” TJ adds. Earlier this year, Brothers celebrated the 10-year anniversary of their debut album, “Pawn Shop”, an era-defining album that cemented the blood brothers’. “R.I.P.” references that sound, anchored in their upbringing in Deale, Maryland and bolstered by a live show experience that matches the record. This summer, Brothers Osborne hit the road for a slate of fairs, festivals, and headline dates, before opening for Zac Brown Band on their Love & Fear Tour and The Darkness on their UK Bands of Brothers Arena Tour 2026. Review Brothers Osborne have never been a band content to colour inside the lines, and “R.I.P.” is another reminder of why they remain one of the most exciting acts in modern country music. From the opening bars, the track bursts with swagger, driven by a groove that feels built for warm summer nights, dusty boots, and a crowd ready to sing every word. It’s one of those songs that instantly transports you to the heart of country culture. The atmosphere is infectious, and Brothers Osborne bottle it perfectly. Musically, “R.I.P.” is irresistibly catchy. John Osborne’s guitar work is as sharp and expressive as ever, weaving blues soaked riffs through a pounding rhythm section, while T.J. Osborne delivers the kind of vocal performance that balances grit with effortless charisma. There’s a looseness to the performance that makes it feel spontaneous, yet every hook lands exactly where it should. Lyrically, the song carries the duo’s trademark confidence and wit, wrapped inside a chorus that’s practically impossible not to join in with after a single listen. It’s playful, bold, and packed with personality, embracing the band’s rock influenced edge while staying firmly rooted in contemporary country. At a time when much of mainstream country can feel polished to the point of predictability, “R.I.P.” stands out because it feels alive. It has energy, attitude, and enough musical muscle to keep listeners coming back. Brothers Osborne continue to prove that country music is at its best when it’s allowed to be loud, soulful, and unapologetically fun.

Blast from the past: Robert Plant

The Americana Music Association has announced that Robert Plant will receive its prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the 25th Annual Americana Honors & Awards. The ceremony will take place on Wednesday, 16 September, at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium, recognising Plant’s enduring contribution to Americana and American roots music. Robert Plant’s passion for Americana Although best known as the iconic lead singer of Led Zeppelin, Plant has spent decades championing roots music, embracing influences that span blues, folk, gospel, country and Americana. His musical curiosity has seen him continually explore American roots traditions, earning widespread respect as both an interpreter and advocate of the genre. Raising Sand helped bring Americana to a wider audience One of the defining moments in Plant’s Americana journey came with the release of Raising Sand, his Grammy Award-winning collaboration with Alison Krauss and producer T Bone Burnett. The critically acclaimed album introduced millions of listeners to the richness of Americana music and played a significant role in raising the genre’s profile. Its success also helped pave the way for the Recording Academy to establish the Best Americana Album category at the Grammy Awards. Plant later reunited with Krauss for Raise the Roof, while continuing to collaborate with leading Americana artists including Patty Griffin and Buddy Miller on “Band of Joy”. Continuing to champion roots music More recently, Plant has continued his exploration of Americana with “Saving Grace” and the follow-up EP “Saving Grace: All That Glitters…”, recorded alongside singer Suzi Dian and a group of musicians from near his home on the Welsh borders. The projects feature interpretations of songs by acclaimed Americana and folk artists including Gillian Welch, Memphis Minnie, Blind Willie Johnson, Martha Scanlan and Sarah Siskind among others. Americana Music Association celebrates Robert Plant The Lifetime Achievement Award recognises Plant’s decades-long commitment to preserving and promoting American roots music alongside his remarkable career as one of rock music’s most influential vocalists. Jed Hilly, Executive Director of the Americana Music Association, said: “Robert Plant’s relationship with Americana music extends far beyond influence—it is one of genuine passion, stewardship and artistic curiosity. “His willingness to immerse himself in the traditions of blues, folk, country and gospel, while continuing to push their boundaries, has expanded the audience for Americana around the world. “Few artists have done more to honor the music’s past while helping shape its future. We are thrilled to recognize his extraordinary contributions with the Americana Music Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award.” As Robert Plant prepares to recieve this recognition, Maverick Country takes a look back at his career so far: Few artists have enjoyed a career as diverse, influential and enduring as Robert Plant. Best known as the unmistakable voice of Led Zeppelin, Plant has spent more than five decades pushing musical boundaries, evolving from one of rock’s greatest frontmen into one of the most respected champions of blues, folk, country and Americana. Born in West Bromwich, England, in 1948, Plant developed an early fascination with American blues, inspired by artists including Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf and Skip James. Those influences would shape his musical identity long before he found worldwide fame alongside Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and John Bonham in Led Zeppelin. During the 1970s, Led Zeppelin became one of the biggest rock bands in history, selling hundreds of millions of records worldwide. Albums such as Led Zeppelin IV, Physical Graffiti and Houses of the Holy helped redefine rock music, while songs including Stairway to Heaven, Kashmir and Whole Lotta Love cemented Plant’s reputation as one of the greatest vocalists of all time. Following the death of drummer John Bonham in 1980, Plant resisted attempts to recreate Led Zeppelin’s success, instead embarking on a solo career built around artistic exploration rather than commercial expectation. Over the following decades, he embraced influences from world music, African rhythms, Celtic folk and traditional American roots music, continually reinventing himself while earning widespread critical acclaim. That spirit of musical curiosity ultimately led Plant towards Americana, where he found another creative home. His landmark collaboration with Alison Krauss on the 2007 album “Raising Sand”, produced by T Bone Burnett, proved to be one of the defining releases of the modern Americana movement. The Grammy Award-winning album blended country, folk, blues and bluegrass into a timeless collection that introduced millions of listeners to the genre and remains one of the most influential Americana releases of the 21st century.

Editor's C2C review - Maverick Country

Key Takeaways from C2C London 2026

The Maverick Country team had the pleasure of attending this year’s Country to Country (C2C) 2026, at London’s O2 Arena between Friday, March 13 and Sunday, March 15. A week on from the festival, our editor breaks down the team’s biggest takeaways from a phenomenal show. As soon as you make your way through North Greenwich station and step outside, you’re swept away by the jubilant atmosphere, the vast array of cowboy hats and the feeling you’re witnessing something big. Why the O2 Arena remains the perfect home for C2C The O2 Arena offers an excellent staging ground for just one part of Europe’s biggest country music festival. Indeed, across the whole weekend, the festival saw over 100,000 visitors who also flocked to the OVO Hydro in Glasgow and the SSE Arena in Belfast. The reason the O2 offered a great setting for C2C was the harmony of the stages flowing between different sections of the festival ground. These offered moments where artists took the roof off and a more intimate atmosphere alike. Headliners and songwriter moments that defined the weekend The festival was headlined by Brooks and Dunn, Zach Top and Keith Urban. Keith Urban also played host to the CMA’s Songwriter Series, which was a chance for fans to get in deep with the artists and the stories behind their songs, really highlighting the storytelling tradition of the genre. The Songwriter Series took place in the indigo which also hosted the BBC Radio 2 stage. The station also provided coverage on Saturday and Sunday. Discovering emerging talent across every stage The Maverick Country team had the pleasure of experiencing many of the smaller stages such as the Dutton Ranch Stage, the Saloon and the AXS Big Entrance stage, the latter of which offered passers by the pleasure of soaking up just a piece of the festival atmosphere. We got to meet artists from the UK like Hannah Jane Lewis and Olivia Lynn, both of whom have been featured on BBC Introducing. And lest we forget the Aussies: Tyla Rodrigues, who is set to play CMC Rocks in Queensland this weekend, and Max Jackson who is an ambassador for Australia’s biggest country music event, Tamworth Country Music Festival. International artists embrace European audiences We had the privilege of seeing many of the American artists who made the journey across the pond. These included Annie Bosko, Ashland Craft, Dylan Schneider, Liam St. John, Ryan and Rory, Alyssa Flaherty, Solon Holt and Tyler Sjöström. Many of them had also performed at C2C Berlin and Rotterdam the previous weekend, it being their first time performing outside of the States for the vast majority. When we asked the American artists what they had noticed about the European audiences compared to the crowds they are used to playing in front of, overwhelmingly the response was that Europeans tend to “actually listen” to the music. Tuning in and showing up for their favourite artists seems to be something the emerging artists really appreciated about their C2C experience. UK fans prove why country music is booming If there’s one thing we could say about the UK audience, it’s they really did turn up the party. Many of the American artists we spoke to said how impressed they were with the dedication of the fans, particularly through their knowledge of their lyrics and their fashion. Indeed, the popularity of the genre at this current moment in time cannot be overstated; the CMA recently revealed country music consumption in the UK has increased by 181% since 2020 and has been the fastest growing genre in the UK for the past three years. C2C expansion signals a major moment for UK live music With the festival expanding to Manchester’s AO Arena next year, this really is the time C2C marks a big event on the UK live music calendar.
