Description

Country to Country marks one of the biggest events in the calendar year for Maverick. For this magazine and for me personally, this kind of event has been a long time in the making. To have a festival in the UK that caters to the many varieties of country music all in one place at one time every year is incredible. Our philosophy at Maverick is continuous development. With every issue we put to bed, we try to create the next one better in every way. We always try to improve and every issue becomes our best yet, until the next one comes along. That philosophy has served C2C well too. The festival continues to grow, develop and blossom and with this year, it’s third – we saw the festival grow to a new level. The greatest achievement of this year’s festival in London were the pop up stages. The many wonderful artists featured this year covered all grounds and there were so many, it was impossible to catch them all! I’ve really enjoyed everyone’s feedback this year since the festival – many people have commented on some of the artists they stumbled upon, some that they thought were going to be amazing, that just didn’t stand up against others and the many that simply stood out when maybe you weren’t sure when you heard the album. That’s the amazing thing about live music – you see the artists for who they really are and it can change your perception of a song, an album or an artist. A standout moment for me was at the CMA Songwriters Series on Friday night where the stage was set with five incredilble songwriters including Kix Brooks, Brandy Clark, Sam Palladio, Jessi Alexander and Jon Randall. They were truly captivating, but the standout moment for me, wasn’t with any of those artists but instead with Striking Matches when they jumped up on stage and took Jessi and Jon’s microphones and without any sound check really took the sell out audience by storm! That’s what true talent is all about – to see a young duo like that take to the stage and just do their thing and sound that good! It was admirable and next year they definitely deserve a bigger stage! The announcement since the festival that it will actually run over three days next year is even better news! It’s so great to see this kind of support for country music in the UK and something so big that we can start encouraging those big named American artists to make the journey to us! It’s just one way in which we can prove to them, there is a growing audience here and a growing younger audience at that! For Maverick the festival was a roaring success! We enjoyed having a booth there again this year and it is always a fantastic opportunity every year to meet readers, writers, artists and industry professionals in a great atmosphere. Thanks so much to everyone who took the time to come over, introduce yourselves or just have a friendly chat about the music we were all there to celebrate. We also had some incredible interviews with some truly great artists and our coverage of the festival this year is bigger than it’s ever been. So without further hesitation I’d like to welcome you to Maverick if you’re a newcomer and if you’ve been with us a while, introduce you to, in my view, our best issue yet! But then I say that with every one! Laura Bethell
