Cattle and Cane
Golden
Quiet Crown
17/11/23
This ten track album from Teeside sibling duo Cattle and Cane, is a refreshing sound which boasts a unique production. The strings in the opening tracks second verse are beautiful whilst the subtle horns in the transitions are effective. Melodically it has a strong hook. Themes of hope and family run throughout the album which has been produced by Luke Elgie, their long-time collaborator and bassist. Their harmonies are strong across the whole album and the tracks are built to complement these. ‘Rough Mercy’ is a stand out on the collection with its honest assessment of the heaven and hell moments in a relationship that most will be able to relate to. ‘Dancing’ is another well-written song, a folk song which starts with delicate strings and an acoustic finger-picked guitar, it’s a song about redemption and forgiveness. To conclude, Cattle and Cane show their strength as songwriters and singers on this collection, all delivered by a lovely, unique production.
