Review: Jason Byrd – Gulf Coastin

Jason Byrd is a third generation firefighter who has, in the past few years retired from his post to focus full-time on music and it’s a gamble that’s paid off. ‘Gulf Coastin’ is an upbeat, fun-loving track with a really catchy chorus melody. Set to a traditional country instrumentation, the tone of Byrd’s vocals remind me a little bit of Luke Bryan whilst rhythmically and melodically the song, written by Colin Black and Lauren Spring, sounds like something Kenny Chesney might record. This nod to Florida feature some familiar places in the lyrics, including the Red Bar, Raw Bar, Flora-Bama, Apalachicola and more, all popular with the thousands of vacationers who flock annually to Florida’s gulf coast. Byrd was mentored by none other than the late great George Jones and has even penned a song with the legend himself which was released back in 2021. After years fulfilling one dream as a Battalion Chief of the Tallahassee Fire Department, Byrd is now fulfilling another by getting to play stages such as the Grand Ole Opry. This track is the soundtrack to summer, just close your eyes and pretend you’re on the coast!
