Dolly Parton to Publish New Children’s Book

Global superstar Dolly Parton will publish a new picture book about her god-dog, Billy the Kid, releasing on April 25, 2023 with Penguin Workshop, an imprint of Penguin Young Readers. Featuring illustrations by MacKenzie Haley and aimed at readers ages 4-7, Dolly Parton’s Billy the Kid Makes it Big tells the story of Billy the Kid, a dog who loves barking to the beat of country music and sets out to make it big as a country music star in Nashville. But when he encounters some bullies at the Battle of the Bow-wows, he must call on his favorite songs, and the help of some new friends, to regain his self-confidence and be the star he always knew he could be. “I am so proud to bring this book and the message it conveys to life,” states Parton. “Years back I wrote a song ‘Makin’ Fun Ain’t Funny’ for my children’s album I Believe In You. I wanted kids to understand how harmful bullying can be to someone. When I launched the Doggy Parton line of pet products earlier this year, my god-dog Billy got to be the star of the show. Since he’s a big star now, I knew a story with him at the center could help drive home important messages in a unique way. I hope this is the first of many books with Billy.” Parton’s previous children’s books include Coat Of Many Colors (1994) and I Am A Rainbow (2009). Francesco Sedita, President, Penguin Workshop said, “Working with Dolly is a true delight, and we’re so happy to adopt her god-dog, Billy the Kid, into the Penguin Workshop family!  This story is going to bring joy (and a little bit of country) to so many.”  The deal was brokered by Jeff Kleinman and Steve Troha at Folio and Francesco Sedita, President, Penguin Workshop.

Acme Feed & Seed Unveils Historic Dolly Parton Mural

TomKats Hospitality and Acme Feed & Seed, the bar, restaurant and event space on Lower Broadway, revealed a large-scale mural of Tennessee icon Dolly Parton at a private event this past Friday. Created by local artist MacKenzie Moore – whose recent credits include Kacey Musgraves’ “Star Crossed” album art – in collaboration with CTK Enterprises, the piece adorns Acme’s exterior wall facing First Avenue. Acme is housed in the historic building once home to iconic Nashville businesses like Acme Farm Supply and Acme Feed & Hatchery. “MacKenzie’s work of art brings the spirit of iconic Tennessee artist Dolly to life,” said Lauren Morales, chief operating officer at Acme and TomKats Hospitality. “Showcasing Nashville’s musical legacy and providing a platform for new artist discovery is part of Acme’s core mission. Adding this dose of colorful public art to Broadway, with Dolly’s blessing, is a special honor.” Moore, Morales and CTK representatives were on hand to unveil the mural during the event, where donations were encouraged for Parton’s signature charity, the Imagination Library. During the event, the Imagination Library of Middle Tennessee coordinator Brooke Seigle-Rochelle also spoke about the importance of the charity, which is dedicated to inspiring the love of reading in young children through gifting free, high-quality books to children from birth to age 5. Acme encouraged donations to the charity throughout the entire event. Acme also offered Dolly-themed cocktail specials throughout the weekend, donating $1 for each cocktail sold to the Imagination Library.

Vernell Hackett passes away aged 77

Beloved veteran journalist Vernell Hackett, 77, died in Chicago on August 14, 2026, of cardiac arrest. Hackett collapsed in the Chicago airport en route to Mexico for vacation. Born Vernell Dell Boswank, Hackett was a proud Texan who grew up in the tiny town of Riesel in McLennan County. She graduated from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. Her older brother Bubba was a Houston police officer, and Hackett initially planned a career in crime reporting, but her love of music won out, and she became one of the nation’s top entertainment journalists. Following college, she and her husband Ken moved to Buffalo, NY, to be near his family before later relocating to Nashville. As she built her career in Music City, Hackett took a job at Top Billing International, working for legendary booking agent Tandy Rice, who represented Dolly Parton, Jim Ed Brown, Jerry Clower, Porter Wagoner, Jeannie C. Riley, Tom T. Hall, and more. Hackett later worked in the communications department at the Country Music Association. A respected voice in country music Hackett’s skills as a journalist best exemplify her legacy in Nashville. She was a gifted writer, always able to bring her subjects to vivid life in her articles, and her integrity earned her the trust of country music’s most acclaimed artists. Hackett was always gracious with her time and frequently mentored young reporters while serving as editor of Country News, Country Rhythms, and American Songwriter magazines. One of her proudest accomplishments was being a founder of American Songwriter magazine. She shepherded the publication as editor-in-chief for more than a decade, and passionately championed songwriters all her life. Over the course of her career, she freelanced for numerous publications and radio syndicators. Hackett’s resume also includes public relations. In the 1980s, she worked with a struggling rodeo cowboy who was selling cassettes out of his trunk. The first time many heard of Chris LeDoux was because of Hackett. He went on to be a superstar, and Chris and his father Al never forgot the role Hackett played in launching his career. She represented award-winning bluegrass artist Dale Ann Bradley, singer/songwriter Ryan Murphey, western singer/songwriter Joni Harms, Americana duo Jesse & Noah, John McEuen, and cowboy singer/songwriter/rancher Randy Huston. Hackett was also an author. She penned Ghosts, Gangsters and Gamblers of Las Vegas with longtime friends Liz Cavanaugh and Michelle Honick and also wrote a biography of Carrie Underwood. A lifelong commitment to animal welfare Hackett was a noted philanthropist and was particularly passionate about animal rights. She worked tirelessly with animal rescues and was a major supporter of the Robyn’s Nest shelter. Decades ago, when friends threw a birthday party, Hackett told people not to bring gifts but to bring dog food. She gathered her musician friends for some good old-fashioned pickin’ and singin’, and thus an annual tradition was born that saw thousands of pounds of pet food as well as monetary donations go to Robyn’s Nest. Hackett is survived by her nephew Glen Boswank of Nashville and niece Katy Prewitt of Kaufman, Texas. She leaves behind a legacy of love and an excellent body of work that helped elevate many talented artists to prominence. Remembered by friends and artists Artists including Michael Martin Murphey, Duane Allen of The Oak Ridge Boys and David Bellamy of The Bellamy Brothers shared their condolences and happy memories of Hackett. “Vernell Hackett was the kindest, most down-to-earth journalist and human being I’ve ever known. She had a sense of what the common, everyday country music fan is looking for in a story. Vernell went out of her way to support me on my journey to put the “Western” back in “Country”. She really had fun with that! Vernell was a true friend who let nothing stand in the way of what friendship really means- accepting the many imperfections all people have. She was just as concerned about how your family and pets were doing as she was about your latest hit record. She led a life of love and laughter and joy, but when tears came, hers always washed away the sorrow.” said Michael Martin Murphey. Duane Allen said, “Vernell was my close personal friend for decades. Sometimes, we would talk two or three times a week. The last week of her life, she sent a beautiful poem that was suitable to hang on any wall. I look forward to seeing her in Heaven, rejoicing with our many mutual friends, and I can imagine that there will be many of our four-legged friends to keep us company.” “She was always so very kind to us, and we feel privileged to have known her through the years. We send prayers and condolences to her family and loved ones,” shared David Bellamy.

Album review: ‘Run, Rose, Run’ by Dolly Parton

This is, in many ways, an unprecedented project both for James Patterson and Dolly Parton plus the entertainment and leisure industry as well. Patterson has teamed up with other celebrities to craft novel’s set in their chosen field before whilst Parton has written music for a brief like a film script. However, this is her first novel and unlike most novel’s, an accompanying album has been written by her. Although she sings each track, she is singing from the hearts of three of her characters from the novel. On the face of it, this could be another Dolly Parton album, it makes sense as a stand alone body of work and is cohesive sonically. In some ways these songs are just designed to punctuate the novel but in true Dolly fashion each song tells it’s own story, there’s a lot of weight to the lyrics as we hear in ‘Woman Up and Take It Like A Man’. It features those lyrics we keep on reading throughout the novel – ‘Is it easy, no it ain’t, can I fix it, no I cain’t, but I sure ain’t gonna take it lying down.’ There is a grit and determination in the lyric that is both relatable and inspiring. Surprisingly, much of the record feels upbeat and driven in spite of the darkness that looms over the thickening plot in the novel. Don’t underestimate the power of the production and arrangement in achieving this; the classic country sound with a shuffling drum beat and busy fiddle has the ability to lift hearts whilst of course there is an energy that is reflected within the lyrics. The fieriness and resilience of the characters she is portraying shines through in Parton’s delivery, particularly on ‘Snakes in the Grass’. It’s a stand out on the record – her vocals are powerful – she sounds her very best here as she projects that chorus. The production is well thought through, the shaker bringing images of rattle snakes to mind whilst the backing vocals take it to a whole new level. It’s a foot stomping number that pushes forward and helps sustain the suspense that runs throughout the book. Similarly, ‘Firecracker’ really helps to bring to life the personality traits of our principal character AnnieLee Keyes. Occasionally there is a more delicate song, more vulnerable. Again, it reflects the story and characters who, though you know it’s there, very rarely show their vulnerable side to the outside world. Those ballads tug on your heartstrings though, particularly the closing number ‘Love or Lust’ which sees her team up with Richard Dennison for a duet made all the more poignant by the string arrangement. It’s not the only duet on the record as ‘Demons’ opens with the sound of Ben Haggard’s voice and Joe Nichols joins her for ‘Lost and Found’. In conclusion, this is a fantastic record that beautifully accompanies and enhances the characters and story told in the novel. Lyrically and musically it is a strong record from Parton who shows there is no end to her talents with this wonderful project.
