Review: Jessica Lynn – Not Your Woman (The Sweetwater Sessions)

The bass drum might be the first thing you notice about this track. With a heavy beat and guitar embellishments that grow into chords driving the track towards its chorus. Lynn’s vocals have been frequently compared to Shania Twain and it’s easy to draw that parallel on this track. A reimagining of her popular 2016 song, the Sweetwater Sessions version of ‘Not Your Woman’ adds something special, a strength and grit that Lynn has curated over the years, becoming a more confident and believable performer as she hones her craft. The country/rock heart of Lynn’s hit remains, although there are points where her voice – as great as her vocals are – could have been prioritised over the instrumentation of the track. Taking the shine off the track by adding in more leading guitar and the growth in her growling makes this song even better, somehow both more country and more rock than the original.
