The Americana Music Association has announced that Robert Plant will receive its prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the 25th Annual Americana Honors & Awards. The ceremony will take place on Wednesday, 16 September, at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium, recognising Plant’s enduring contribution to Americana and American roots music. Robert Plant’s passion for Americana Although best known as the iconic lead singer of Led Zeppelin, Plant has spent decades championing roots music, embracing influences that span blues, folk, gospel, country and Americana. His musical curiosity has seen him continually explore American roots traditions, earning widespread respect as both an interpreter and advocate of the genre. Raising Sand helped bring Americana to a wider audience One of the defining moments in Plant’s Americana journey came with the release of Raising Sand, his Grammy Award-winning collaboration with Alison Krauss and producer T Bone Burnett. The critically acclaimed album introduced millions of listeners to the richness of Americana music and played a significant role in raising the genre’s profile. Its success also helped pave the way for the Recording Academy to establish the Best Americana Album category at the Grammy Awards. Plant later reunited with Krauss for Raise the Roof, while continuing to collaborate with leading Americana artists including Patty Griffin and Buddy Miller on “Band of Joy”. Continuing to champion roots music More recently, Plant has continued his exploration of Americana with “Saving Grace” and the follow-up EP “Saving Grace: All That Glitters…”, recorded alongside singer Suzi Dian and a group of musicians from near his home on the Welsh borders. The projects feature interpretations of songs by acclaimed Americana and folk artists including Gillian Welch, Memphis Minnie, Blind Willie Johnson, Martha Scanlan and Sarah Siskind among others. Best known as the unmistakable voice of Led Zeppelin, Plant has spent more than five decades pushing musical boundaries, evolving from one of rock’s greatest frontmen into one of the most respected champions of blues, folk, country and Americana. Born in West Bromwich, England, in 1948, Plant developed an early fascination with American blues, inspired by artists including Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf and Skip James. Those influences would shape his musical identity long before he found worldwide fame alongside Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and John Bonham in Led Zeppelin. During the 1970s, Led Zeppelin became one of the biggest rock bands in history, selling hundreds of millions of records worldwide. That spirit of musical curiosity ultimately led Plant towards Americana, where he found another creative home. His landmark collaboration with Alison Krauss on the 2007 album “Raising Sand”, produced by T Bone Burnett, proved to be one of the defining releases of the modern Americana movement. The Grammy Award-winning album blended country, folk, blues and bluegrass into a timeless collection that introduced millions of listeners to the genre and remains one of the most influential Americana releases of the 21st century.
