MerleFest

MerleFest is a four day celebration of roots based music held on the campus of Wilkes Community College in Wilkesboro, North Carolina. Founded in 1988 in memory of Eddy Merle Watson, son of American music legend Doc Watson, the festival has grown into an annual gathering for musicians and music fans while remaining an important fundraiser for the college.

At the heart of MerleFest is what Doc Watson described as “traditional plus” music. The concept combines the traditional, roots oriented sounds of the Appalachian region, including bluegrass and old time music, with Americana, country, blues, rock and other styles. Performances take place across 12 stages, creating a varied programme throughout the festival.

Appalachian music and community

Beyond the main performances, MerleFest offers numerous ways for visitors to become part of its musical community. The Pickin’ Place encourages festivalgoers to bring their own acoustic instruments and join dedicated old time, bluegrass and open jam areas, while Acoustic Kids Showcases give young musicians opportunities to perform on festival stages.

Visitors can also explore the Shoppes at MerleFest, discover instrument makers and musical equipment at the Expo Center, take nature walks around the college campus and enjoy activities in the Little Pickers Family Area.

Combining Appalachian musical traditions, collaboration and community, MerleFest celebrates what it describes as music, moments and memories.
