Manchester singer-songwriter Robbie Cavanagh returns with “Do What You Like.” The track is the first single from his forthcoming album, due in Spring 2027. Released on 23 October 2026, the track sees Cavanagh team up with producer Rod Jones of Idlewild and with California vocal trio Rainbow Girls adding their distinctive harmonies.
Balancing sincerity with a sharp streak of sarcasm, “Do What You Like” tackles betrayal with a mixture of bemusement, defiance and hard-won indifference. Rather than dwelling on the hurt, Cavanagh turns the tables. He finds humour in the situation and leaves the culprit blissfully unaware that they’ve become the punchline. Confrontational yet playful, it’s the perfect soundtrack to a post-break-up party. The single is about taking back control and refusing to give someone the satisfaction of seeing you hurt.
Rainbow Girls, Erin Chapin, Caitlin Gowdey and Vanessa Wilbourn, bring an added dimension to the track. They complement Cavanagh’s songwriting with their distinctive vocal presence.
The single offers the first taste of a new album that continues to develop Cavanagh’s reputation as a compelling songwriter. He pairs emotional honesty with an increasingly assured musical identity. With Rod Jones at the production helm, the forthcoming record promises another step forward for an artist whose career has been built on the strength of his songs and his connection with audiences.
Following a sold-out Manchester show promoted by SJM in September 2025, Cavanagh returns for a focused four-date UK tour in November 2026, bringing the new material to audiences in London, Bristol, Glasgow and his hometown of Manchester.
Review
There is something wonderfully refreshing about an artist who can deliver a song with just enough sarcasm to creep through the cracks. Robbie Cavanagh manages precisely that with his latest single, “Do What You Like”, a track that proves a little wit can be every bit as effective as heartfelt sincerity.
What makes this release particularly appealing is the sense that there is more going on beneath the surface. The title itself suggests a carefree attitude, but there is an intriguing possibility that Cavanagh means something rather different. That subtle hint of sarcasm gives the song an extra dimension, inviting listeners to question whether the sentiment is genuine encouragement or a beautifully disguised expression of frustration.
It is an approach that feels surprisingly uncommon in contemporary country and Americana, where emotional honesty often takes centre stage and everything is laid out for the listener. Cavanagh appears comfortable leaving a little room for interpretation, and that restraint is part of the appeal. There is something distinctly British about the understated humour, particularly when it carries just enough bite to make you smile.
The real charm of “Do What You Like” lies in that balance between sincerity and mischief. Rather than relying on an obvious punchline. It is clever without trying too hard, and the suggestion of an eye roll behind the sentiment makes it all the more enjoyable.
For me, that is what elevates this release. Plenty of songs can make you feel something, but fewer manage to make you smile knowingly at the same time. Robbie Cavanagh has delivered a track with personality, character and a welcome touch of sarcasm. Sometimes, saying exactly what you mean is overrated.
